11/11/08 - Update on Clifton Bridge

A temporary road has been constructed by SBcContracts to Clifton-on-Bowmont via Duncanshaugh and will be maintained for the duration of the bridge closure. This takes away the need for any temporary vehicular bridge into Clifton.

The pedestrian access bridge will be maintained until the main repair works to the bridge are started. During the design of the repair works the viability of keeping a public access over the bridge will be looked into – this may however be difficult to maintain for health and safety reasons.

The existing bridge pier and remainder of the right abutment (which was partially washed away) have been stabilised and underpinned with concrete and the riverbed through both arches has been reinforced with large rip-rap which should prevent any further damage and scour to the riverbed, piers and abutments.

Design work for the bridge repair and rebuilding scheme is underway, however, now the invert repairs are complete we are awaiting further survey information of the damaged area which could not previously be accessed due to deep scour holes.

Details of the repair scheme will be submitted to Historic Scotland for approval prior to going out to Contract.
