Rural Development
The Scottish Borders is a sparsely populated rural area.
Due to its rural nature, there is a strong base of primary production including a wide variety of agricultural produce, a significant forest resource and an important local fishing fleet.
The River Tweed (external website) also provides an important fisheries and tourism resource.
LEADER is a European funding programme that encourages innovative rural development. The LEADER Programme 2007-2013 is now open to applications. A list of projects approved under the previous programme (LEADER+ 2000-2006) is available. Projects funded by the new LEADER 2007-2013 Programme will be published as they receive approval.
Rural Development Contracts - Rural Priorities is a key feature of the new Scottish Rural Development Plan. The aim of this new grant fund is to deliver targeted environmental, social and economic benefits to Scotland. More information is available from the Forestry Commission and Scottish Natural Heritage who have dedicated case officers.
