How to Vote

If you are not on the Electoral Register then you will not be able to vote in any election. To check if you are on the Register you need to contact the Electoral Registration Officer or you can visit the Scottish Assesor's website for more details.

Registering to vote - forms:

Please visit the Scottish Assessor's website to do any of the following:

  • To apply to have your name added to the Register
  • To apply for a postal vote or
  • To appoint a proxy to vote on your behalf

The Register of Electors, or Voters Roll as it is often called, is principally based on an annual canvass of all properties in the Borders where electors may reside, although you may apply at any time for inclusion in the Register. When the Register is published, it is effectively a list of addresses where the names of those persons registered to vote is shown.

The Register also shows the entitlement of individuals to vote at various types of election. Although your name may appear on the Electoral Register, you are not under any legal obligation to vote in any election, unless you wish to do so.

You would normally vote at a polling place, the address of which would be sent to you on a polling card prior to any election in which you are entitled to vote. However, if you are not able to attend at a polling station on the day of the election, you may apply in advance for either a postal vote or a proxy vote. Different rules govern each of these methods of "absent voting". For further details please contact the Electoral Registration Officer.
