Street Lights

Lighting on streets and other public places is provided for public safety, road safety and general security. The Council's Lighting and Communications Service is responsible for maintaining around 19,500 street lights and 1,500 illuminated road signs and bollards. We will try to give you as much useful information as we can about street lighting in the links below.
Lighting Maintenance - Inspection and repair cycles
One of the most frequent enquiries we get from members of the public is to ask when a street light that has stopped working
will be repaired. We understand how important street lights can be for safety and security and do our best to respond quickly.
In addition, we regularly inspect our lights (known as "scouting") to try to spot faults before they become serious problems.
Unfortunately, limited funds restrict how often we can do this. Contact Street Lighting for information on the current 'scouting rota' to find out when your area will be visited next.
Lighting in housing schemes
While we look after most of the roadside lights on housing schemes, there are also lights in vennels, closes and paths that
may not be the Council's responsibility. Very often, these are maintained by the housing authority for the scheme. Here are
some useful links to the local housing authorities.
Report a street lighting fault
If you know of a fault with a street light you can report it on-line, by using Local View, our fault reporting by map service, or by ringing 01835 825131 and speaking directly to a member of our Lighting and Communications
staff. Please have the lamp post number and street name handy when you call. If you don't know the lamp post number, you can give us the nearest house number to it.
