Warning to small businesses in the Borders
Friday, July 4 2008
Scottish Borders Council has been advised that some 'rating consultants' and advisers have been approaching businesses in Scotland offering to assist with the application process for the Small Business Bonus Scheme.
In doing so however, it is understood that they are proposing to charge an excessive fee (allegedly up to 50 per cent) of the Small Business Bonus relief awarded. This effectively dilutes this vital support to Scotland’s smallest businesses.
Businesses should contact the Non Domestic Rates team on 0845 3000 341 in the first instance for free and impartial advice and information on the application process for the Small Business Bonus Scheme.
Information and application forms are also available at www.scotborders.gov.uk/businessrates. The application process itself is simple and straightforward.
Any business which receives an excessive quote from one of these advisers may wish to report the matter to the Trading Standards Service on 01896 823922.
