Local winners in National Awards

Two Scottish Borders communities collected three awards between them at the Beautiful Scotland (formerly Beautiful Scotland in Bloom) national award ceremony recently.
Melrose won two awards - the Large Village Trophy and the premier Best Village runner up trophy, while Yetholm was the winner
of the Jim Murdie Trophy for Sustainability.
Both Melrose and Yetholm, along with five other Borders communities – Kelso, Galashiels, Peebles, Newcastleton and Hawick – also featured among the winners in various other categories.
This year 48 cities, towns, villages, urban communities and coastal resorts entered for awards, which were all assessed under four main criteria: floral displays, sustainable development and biodiversity initiatives, environmental quality and community involvement.
Councillor Len Wyse, Scottish Borders Council’s Executive Member for the Environment, said: “This year’s Floral Gateway and Beautiful Scotland competitions have provided an excellent example of what can be done by enthusiastic residents when they want to improve their environment - well done to everyone involved.
“It would be great to see even more Borders towns and villages taking part in both competitions next year”.
