Local youngsters in national reading challenge

Thursday, September 25 2008

Youngsters across the Borders were busy over the summer holidays reading a range of books as part of the national summer reading challenge, Team Read.

The aim was to encourage youngsters to visit their local library and read at least six books over the summer. All of the Borders libraries hosted the challenge and almost 400 youngsters took part.

This year’s Team Read had an Olympic theme. If participants read two books, they got a bronze medal sticker; if they read four, they claimed a silver sticker and if they read six, they got a gold sticker and were presented with a gold medal.

Executive Member for Sport, Culture and Community Education, Councillor Graham Garvie said: “I am delighted that so many youngsters took part in this year’s event as it really does encourage children to go along to their local library, meet staff and have a good time.”

Many libraries laid on activities such as sports-themed crafts and old-fashioned games – and a visit by local athlete Peter Holmes.
