Helping residents get the most out of recycling services

Tuesday, October 7 2008

Scottish Borders Council has launched a project to increase recycling rates by helping residents to get the most out of kerbside recycling services.

In the first exercise, in the Balmoral area of Galashiels, the recycling team will monitor the amount of waste and recycling put out for collection on the kerbside.

The team will then visit residents, from 16 October, to offer advice on the best way to use the recycling services and how to recycle more.

Another week of monitoring will be followed by a second three-week period of household visits.

The recycling team will be highlighting the importance of using recycling bags only for materials for kerbside recycling. They will also show residents how to cut down the amount of general waste they put out for collection.

“Recycling is now firmly established in the Borders, but there is room for improvement,” said Councillor Len Wyse, Executive Member for Environmental Services.

“While there are a number of areas throughout the Borders that could have been selected, the area chosen is conveniently located for our staff and resources. However, this exercise will be repeated in other areas right across the Borders in the future.

“Scotland’s recycling target for 2008 was 30 per cent and we have met that. The next target is 40 per cent by 2010. Spending time talking to householders is an important way of building up understanding and helping us all work together to achieve that goal,” he added.
