Easier recycling in store for households and businesses

Recycling in the Borders will be easier from next week, when householders and businesses will be able to use one bag instead of two for recycling materials.
Scottish Borders Council has announced that, from 20 October, all materials for recycling can go in the same bag, which means less time sorting items and fewer bags to store.
At the moment, householders use clear and lilac bags for different materials, while businesses have orange and green bags.
Moving to a single bag for domestic and trade recycling will make it easier for householders and businesses, and will also mean that the Council can cut the number of bags it issues.
Those who don’t normally fill a bag of each type each week should use fewer bags overall, so resources will be used much more effectively. There is no limit on the number of recycling bags that can go out each week.
Councillor Len Wyse, the Council’s Executive Member for Environmental Services, said: “Council staff carried out a survey with members of the public about the initiative and 99 per cent believed it was a good idea - 97 per cent said it would make recycling easier to do at home. This is a real win-win situation for everyone.”
Waste Strategy Manager, Julie Rankine, added: “We are really pleased with the public’s support of the recycling scheme. These changes are another step in the evolution of our waste strategy, and will allow us to continue to increase recycling rates by making the services even easier to use.”
She added “We are continuing to ask Borders residents and businesses to only put out their recycling bags when they are full – unless the bag is too heavy, in which case they should put them out as necessary”.
