Scottish Borders Council’s Waste Strategy Manager, Julie Rankine, has won a national award for success in recycling and sustainable waste management. In the 2008 Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management, organised by letsrecycle.com, Julie was named Local Authority Recycling Champion.
Julie has been the public face of recycling for the Borders since becoming waste strategy manager in 2005. She and her team
have has helped to increase recycling rates from eight per cent in 2004-2005 to 33 per cent in 2007-2008, through initiatives
such as radio sponsorship and adverts on buses and council collection vehicles.
Julie said: “I am delighted to have won this award, which recognises the efforts of the whole recycling team at Scottish Borders Council rather than one individual. The vital work of the refuse collection and waste disposal staff and services is central to this success.”
In addition, the recycling staff work with the Council’s Green Team to ensure that Council staff practice what they preach and use green habits at work.
Julie was the only Scottish winner in the awards, which showcased innovation, dedication and success in recycling from across the private, public and third sectors and received more than 130 entries.
Councillor Len Wyse, Executive Member for Environmental Services, added: “The recycling team’s efforts have helped to increase awareness of the three Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), increase recycling rates and reduce landfill. Well done to the team, which has given one hundred per cent and thoroughly deserves this national recognition for its hard work.”
