Winter break for garden waste collections

Tuesday, October 21 2008

October 31 is the last day for Scottish Borders Council’s garden waste collections

Anyone with garden waste to dispose of after this date can still take it to the community recycling centres at Duns, Eshiels (Peebles), Eyemouth, Hawick, Selkirk and Easter Langlee (Galashiels).

The material is turned into compost which can be dug into garden beds to improve soil quality. This compost is then used in Council parks and gardens across the Borders.

Gardeners across the Scottish Borders have shown enthusiastic support for the Council’s campaign to ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’. This year, more than 6500 tonnes of garden waste has already been collected from urban homes.

“I have been really impressed with the amount of people using the kerbside garden waste collection service,” said Councillor Len Wyse, Executive Member for Environmental Services.

“Thank you to everyone who is helping to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill. Whether people are composting at home or separating their garden waste for collection, or both, it all means we are making our lives a bit ‘greener’ and doing less harm to the environment, which is something we should be proud of.”

Many households are composting their garden waste at home. This also reduces the amount of waste put out for collection and gives gardeners their own supply of compost to use on their own land to promote better plant growth.

Information on composting, including special offers on home composters, is available on the Council website at www.scotborders.gov.uk/recycling or by calling the recycling team on 01835 825128. The Council’s composting partner, Ask Organic, can be contacted for advice on 01450 860778 for advice, or visit www.askorganic.co.uk
