Further help to pay rent and council tax
Tuesday, October 28 2008
From 27 October, maintenance payments made for children are no longer taken into account as income in calculating housing and council tax benefits.
Until that date, only £15 of any maintenance payment was disregarded. Any income of that type will now be completely disregarded, which means that more families will be entitled to get help to pay their rent and council tax.
Any families who are currently receiving housing or council tax benefits from Scottish Borders Council do not need to do anything. Their claims will be re-calculated and they will be notified of any change.
Anyone who currently gets maintenance payments for a child and otherwise has a low income may be entitled to housing and/or council tax benefit. To find out if they qualify they should use the calculator at www.scotborders.gov.uk/benefits or contact their nearest Council Contact Centre.
