Council community grants up for grabs
Monday, November 17 2008
Grants of up to £5,000 for community groups and voluntary organisations in the Borders are up for grabs.
Groups looking for funding for specific events or projects, or for support with on-going costs, can apply to the Council’s Community Grant Scheme for help.
The scheme for this year still has funding available in all five Area Committee areas of the Borders and funding can be accessed easily and swiftly by completing a simple application form.
Last year (2007/08) the scheme was a resounding success and has benefited every area of the Scottish Borders with 65 projects having received support.
Scottish Borders Council’s Lottery Officer, Jean Robertson, said: “Last year was another successful year for the Community Grant Scheme. A range of great projects were funded and in many cases, the Council grant was part of a bigger funding package”.
One group to receive funding from the scheme was the Borders Chinese Cultural Association. This newly-formed group received a start up grant of just £432 to help them get their ideas off the ground and to pay for marketing materials and a digital camera. They then went on to apply to the National Lottery’s Awards for All programme, securing a further £6,000 to stage a community event in Galashiels, celebrating the Chinese New Year and sharing many exciting aspects of Chinese culture with the Borders community.
Any groups interested in applying for funding should contact Linda Cornwall, Grants Co-ordinator, on 01835 826659 or Jean Robertson, Lottery Officer on 01835 826543.
