Five local sports stars were inducted into Scottish Borders Council’s Sporting Hall of Fame at the weekend.
The announcements were made at the annual James McLean Trust Celebration of Sport dinner at the Cross Keys Hotel in Kelso on Saturday 15 November.
Well known broadcaster Jill Douglas; track and field coach James Curran; hockey ace Diane Renilson and rugby stars Gregor Townsend and Alan Tait were added to the prestigious list of individuals already in the Hall of Fame.
Max Arthur, SBC’s Sport and Recreation Manager, introduced the awards by saying: “We are a sporting community in the Borders and the Hall of Fame is in honour of those local heroes we have in the Borders that inspire, motivate, encourage and capture the imagination of our community so that sport is championed as a part of day-to-day life.
“We all have our heroes, people we admire and want to emulate, and our sports stars can be a major influence on our young people in particular.”
SBC Convener Councillor Alasdair Hutton presented the awards. He said: “Scottish Borders Council is delighted to be playing its part in supporting sport in the Borders. Having such outstanding achievers in their sporting fields past and present hailing from the area gives everyone around them the inspiration to reach for the same success.”
The Hall of Fame was established in November 2005 and
is a ‘virtual hall’ based on the new SportBorders website www.sportborders.org.uk/hall-of-fame.html.
Current members include Jim Clark (motor-sports), John Collins (football), Steve Hislop (motor-cycling) and Janet Jack (hockey).
