Hawick Museum looks forward to busy winter
Wednesday, November 19 2008
Hawick Museum in Wilton Lodge Park is looking forward to a busy winter with three new exhibitions on display from now into 2009.
‘Ecce Romani - Romans in the Borders’ displays Border life under the Romans with a host of Roman artefacts as well as life-size reproduction sets.
Visitors can enter a centurion’s tent, a Roman kitchen and learn some Latin from the Roman Wall – from now until 1 March 2009 in the Scott Gallery.
The exhibition ties in with the primary school curriculum and more than 20 classes have already booked visits.
Another exhibition is ‘Postmarked Hawick’ - a postal history exhibition, with national award-winning exhibits, tracing the town’s postal history from 1768 in a fascinating show of historical letters, postmarks, stamps, postboxes and local postal memorabilia.
Put together with the help of Jake Coltman of the Hawick Stamp and Postcard Society, the exhibition runs until Sunday 25 January 2009 in the front hall.
‘Mungo Park, the Legend and the Legacy’ – uncovers the story of the explorer from near Selkirk whose legendary travels in Africa in the late 18th and early 19th centuries shed light on a wider world. The exhibition includes letters from Park and objects associated with him – open until Sunday 18 January 2009 in the Waterfall Gallery.
Opening hours are: Monday to Friday, 12 noon–3p.m. and Sunday 1-3p.m. Admission is free but the museum will be closed over the Christmas and New Year period from 25 December, reopening Monday 5 January.
