Old televisions find a new home

In a bid to drive up recycling rates across the area, Scottish Borders Council has once again increased the range of items that can be taken to Community Recycling Centres (CRCs).
Fridges and freezers were already accepted, but now items such as televisions, computer monitors, fluorescent tubes and small domestic appliances such as kettles or electric toothbrushes are all accepted.
These items may contain materials and chemicals that can be harmful to the environment so, by recycling them, these harmful elements no longer go to landfill.
Councillor Len Wyse, Executive Member for Environmental Services, said: “Taking these products to the local CRC will help reduce contamination from dumped TVs and other products, and also help to get closer to our target of recycling 40 per cent of waste by 2010.”
A full list of which products can be recycled at which CRCs is available on the council recycling web pages at www.scotborders.gov.uk/recycling or by calling 01835 825111.
