HMIE Inspection – St Margaret’s R.C. Primary
Wednesday, November 26 2008
Her Majesty’s Inspectors of Education visited St Margaret’s R.C. Primary, Hawick, in September and October 2008 as part of a national programme of school inspections.
The manager of learning, Mrs Morag McCreadie, who had been in post for six weeks at the time of inspection, said: “We recognise that this is a very challenging report and work is now under way on steps to deliver improvements for every single pupil.
“The inspectors recognised that care and welfare of pupils and strong community spirit is at the heart of the school, which fosters positive relationships with staff and parents. We are all committed to working together to inspire the work of the school and achieve the best possible outcomes for our pupils.”
The key strengths of the school identified by the inspectors are the:
- concern staff show for the care and welfare of children.
- welcoming atmosphere and sense of community within the school.
- involvement by older children in supporting younger pupils.
The following areas for improvement have been agreed:
- Ensure that children’s learning experiences are more stimulating and challenging, with more use of play at the early stages.
- Raise attainment in English language and mathematics and extend children’s use of information and communications technology
- Develop children’s skills as independent learners and effective contributors in group work and involve them more fully in their learning by providing high quality feedback.
- Improve approaches to monitoring individuals’ progress across the curriculum to ensure that all children’s learning needs are met.
Speaking about the inspection, Director of Education Glenn Rodger said: “There is huge task ahead of the school but we have every confidence that under Mrs McCreadie’s leadership the school will be able to achieve the required improvements.”
