Homes reconnected to gas supply in Kelso

Thursday, December 4 2008

Almost all of the homes affected by the loss of gas supply in Kelso were expected to be reconnected by lunchtime today (Thursday).

Engineers had reconnected all properties they were able to gain access to by last night, which left a small number of ‘no access’ buildings.

These properties were being revisited today. Any homes the engineers still cannot not gain access to will be left a letter giving details of numbers to phone to have their supply reconnected.

The emergency situation was expected to end by early afternoon today and Scotland Gas Networks (SGN) will return to normal operating procedures – although Kelso home owners contacting the company to be reconnected will be given priority.

Homeowners still without gas were being urged to try to make sure someone was at home today to allow engineers to access their properties.

The drop-in centre at Kelso High School will remain open to provide hot lunches today but will close at 2pm.

Anyone still requiring urgent assistance should contact the SGN helpline on 0845 070 1432, Kelso social work office on 01573 223501 (during working hours) or SBC’s 24 hour Bordercare number on 01896 752111.

Council Leader David Parker said: “I would like to thank everyone involved for their hard work during this crisis. SGN has worked very hard to have these supplies connected as soon as was possible and have worked well in partnership with SBC and NHS Borders in identifying priority sites.

“Our social work and NHS Borders teams pulled out the stops to make sure vulnerable residents in the affected area were contacted at an early stage and their urgent needs met.

“Finally, a big thank you to the Council staff and volunteers from the Red Cross and WRVS who helped run the drop-in centre at Kelso High School which proved to be an appreciated and valuable resource to those community members feeling the cold.”
