Road Safety
The Council's most recent Road Safety Plan was published in April 2002. A new plan should be available in future but until then you can view a summary of the 2002 Plan.
One important aspect of improving road safety is the Council's work in the Lothian and Borders Safety Camera Partnership. More information on this is available from http://lbsafetycameras.co.uk/
Information on the number of people killed or injured in Road Accidents is also published by the Scottish Government.
The Council has adopted the Government's targets to:

reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured by 40%
-
reduce the number of children killed or seriuosly injured by 50% and
- reduce the rate of slight injuries per vehicle distance travelled by 10%
The baseline for the targets is the average for 1994-8 and they should be achieved by 2010
The figures for the Scottish Borders area (including the Trunk roads) show that in 2003:
- 14 people were killed
- 102 were seriously injured, and
- 514 were slightly injured
In comparison with other Council areas, the Scottish Borders area had the worst change in the number of people killed or seriously injured in 2003 from the baseline (with an increase of 1%). For the whole of the Lothian and Borders area there had been a reduction of 21% and for Scotland there had been a 33% reduction in total.
Detailed consideration of why the Scottish Borders area has had the worst change is likely to be included in the next Road Safety Plan.
