Roads Information

Rural Borders road

The Borders is a largely rural area and relies on a well maintained road network to enable people in remote communities to get to shops, schools and workplaces. Added to this is the fact that roads are the only way of getting around in the area since the Waverley Railway line was closed in 1965.

Traffic is relatively light although road freight, which is necessary for economic stability and development, is increasing, largely due to timber harvesting in remote areas. This puts an ever increasing strain on maintenance and road safety.

The Council is responsible for the management and maintenance of all public roads in the Borders, with the exception of trunk roads, which are managed by a management contractor that works on behalf of Transport Scotland. You can check to see which roads are trunk roads

For any enquiry concerning trunk roads, please contact BEAR (Scotland) on 0800 138 9903 or through their website enquiries.

For all other roads, you can get more information by clicking on one of the following links:

If you know of a problem anywhere on the road network (except on a trunk road) you can report a road defect to one of our area offices or through Local View, our map based defect reporting service. If you have an enquiry about the Council's policy on road management and maintenance, contact our Road Network Management Service.
