Scenic Driving Route - East Borders
This scenic drive through the east Borders starts in the picturesque market town of Duns.
From Duns, follow the A6112 south to Swinton (a typical border village, arranged around a large communal village green). Leave Swinton on the B6461 toward Paxton. (You may want to visit Paxton House and its beautiful grounds.) Keep on the B6461 past the turning for Paxton and on to the A1 near Berwick-Upon-Tweed.
Follow the A1 north passed Burnmouth, turn off the A1 at Ayton to see the historic Ayton Castle. Leave Ayton on the B6355 north toward Eyemouth.
Turn left at the outskirts of Eyemouth onto the A1107 north-west to Coldingham. (You may want to take a small detour from
Coldingham to the unspoilt fishing village of St Abbs or park up and walk the short distance to Coldingham Sands)
From Coldingham the route continues north-west on the A1107 with a small detour on the unclassified road through Pease Bay to Cockburnspath (this is a narrow road with passing places). From Cockburnspath the route returns south on the A1 to Grantshouse where you turn right onto the A6122 towards Duns. After about three miles take the unclassified road for Abbey St Bathans.
This is the final leg of the journey leading back to Duns and the road is sometimes narrow and twisty in nature so leave plenty of time for this part of the journey and please watch your speed.
As a guide, this route is about 62 miles long and should have a driving time of about 3 hours.
